Pain & Inflammation

Pain is a sensation produced by the stimulation of specialized nerve-endings which are plentiful in the skin, membranes, body linings, body cavities and joints. It’s described as a physical or bodily suffering which arises from illness, injury or harmful physical contact.

We experience pain when pain receptors in the body (nociceptors) respond to a painful stimulus by sending an impulse up the nerve fibres to the spinal cord, and subsequently into the brain where it is interpreted as pain.

The brain processes this information to prevent further pain or injury. Through a process of learning, we are taught to avoid pain-causing situations.
