Treating equine pain with rest

Rest is generally beneficial, but there are some cases where continued and controlled exercise is an advantage.

If a horse has a fractured limb and the fracture cannot be stabilized with either surgery or a cast, then immobilization by stall rest is essential. For instance, in some pelvic fractures, cross-tying a horse will prevent it from lying down and potentially displacing the fracture.
